The Eastern national highways traverse a varied landscape. The tracing, elevation and layout of the road are based on the landscape and are used in the service of a strong experience of it. Obvious examples are the A1, A18, A28 and the A50. With incisions in moraines, generous river crossings and views of special cultural-historical and landscape elements.
These qualities are increasingly under pressure from a variety of developments on and around the road network. Such as business parks, energy landscapes, housing development and modification of the road network itself.
Based on a rich tradition of landscape design, the vision for the Eastern Netherlands offers suggestions for preserving, strengthening and developing the spatial quality of a total of 700 km of national roads. It provides direction for construction, maintenance, and renovation projects and identifies opportunities regarding, for example, sustainability measures. Keeping in mind the interests and perception of the road from the environment as well.
