Until the early 1990s, the Hoogeveveen Canal still flowed through the heart of Rogat. The place derived its identity from the dynamics on the water and the intersecting road with the pubs near the bridge. Since the canal was routed around the village and the old waterway was filled in, Rogat no longer had a true heart.
The design took history as the basis and gave new meaning to Rogat’s identity as a canal village. Regional traffic through the village is no longer allowed and quality of life, biodiversity and history have been given space. The former presence of the canal has been marked with a linear park. Constructed from a strip with an undulating pattern of diagonals, a generous strip of colorful perennials, hedges and rows of trees. The ends of the park land on stone steps leading to the water and the marina.
Within this linear layout are walking paths, stepping stones and comfortable wooden benches. The function of the place for recreation within the village has thus returned. Striking in the design is the former site of the vanished drawbridge. With a different paving, the crossing is marked. Two sturdy, modern lanterns refer to the bridge and give Rogat a recognisable character.
Over 70% of the design makes use of recycled materials. The surface of paving has been reduced in favor of greenery and water collection. The very diverse perennial assortment and dozens of new trees ensure biodiversity, a varied seasonal image and alternating sunny and shady spots.
