In the design for Dreuplein square, an old supermarket and enormous parking lot make way for social housing and a new, appealing park. The design refers to Assen’s origins as a monastery in a feral forest.
Two archetypes of this primal landscape form the basis for the plan. In the enclosed ‘forest pocket’ the new homes embrace a generous woodland garden. Served up as a ‘plate of fresh salad’, with typical trees, perennials and shrubs from the Drenthe landscape. In the open ‘forest meadow’, paths meander past groups of trees and wadis. It is a new spatial structure that can be expanded over time and gives the city identity and spatial cohesion once again.
Commissioned by the municipality of Assen and housing corporation Actium, we created a plan with native plantings, high biodiversity, space for water and alternating sun and shade spots. This will create a sustainable and inviting oasis in the heart of Assen.
The homes were designed by HJK Architects.
